English Language Arts

Central Berkshire Regional School District employs a research-based reading and writing curriculum developed by Columbia Teachers College Reading and Writing Project in grades K-6.  The Project has a deep and enduring understanding of the foundations of literacy instruction. The units of study from TCRWP provide us with learning progressions that align to the Common Core Curriculum Standards and follow a workshop model of delivery.

In the lower elementary grades, students learn to read. Grades K-2 introduce students to the essential elements of language and sound symbols.  As students progress they begin to read to learn!  The goal is for students to become enthusiastic, independent readers who employ their literacy skills to become agents of their own learning.  In the upper grades students learn to read and interpret more complex texts in a variety of genres. They will learn to ask critical questions, as well as synthesize and interpret what they are reading.
